PRE-BUDGET COMMITTEE CALLS FOR RENEWED FUNDING

VICTORIA -- Following a formal submission from the BC Arts Council, the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services has unanimously recommended that the Province restore funding to the arts to 2008/09 levels.

At the end of October, the BC Arts Council made a written submission to the committee. The document included a review of provincial arts funding developments over the last eight months and a number of recommendations for the next Provincial budget, including a call for Government to reinstate council’s legislated appropriation and assure access to earnings of the BC150 Cultural Fund.

The standing committee submitted its Final Report to the Legislature on November 13, 2009, offering 49 recommendations covering everything from health care and education to funding for the arts.

The committee was made up of MLAs who toured the province, identifying public priorities for next year’s provincial budget.
