What are “subsistence costs”?
Subsistence costs are general living expenses such as housing (rent or mortgage payment), food, and local transportation.
Some BC Arts Council programs for individual artists support subsistence costs incurred while undertaking a funded project or activity. To determine the amount you should request, estimate your subsistence costs for the duration of the project you are applying for.
Check the program guidelines to determine what the maximum allowable subsistence amount is that you can request. If your projected subsistence costs are less than the maximum amount, you should only request what you need.
Travel costs vs. Subsistence costs
Accommodation and other costs in support of travel are not considered subsistence and should be accounted for in the appropriate section of your budget or expense form. Only local travel – for example, transit or taxi – can be included in subsistence.
